THERE is no denying the fact that India is a major player in the global spice market. However, there is further scope for the country to fully exploit its position as a key spice producer, according to Faiyaz Hudani, senior analyst at Mumbai-based Kotak Commodity Services. "Despite being a major producer of spices in the world, India has not been able to capitalise on the benefit of it, as in India should be the price maker for the spices," Mr Hudani claimed. "We still tend to get influenced by other origins also." In cumin seed, India was the leading producer, but on the export side it had seen increased competition from Syria and Turkey over the last few years.
