SRI Lanka has harvested its first crop of cardamom derived from a high yielding clone that was imported from India in an effort to improve yields and expand production. The high quality clone has been planted in the Nuwara Eliya district in the central hills. "It gives good yields right throughout the year and is not seasonal, " explained Damitha Perera, director of Forbes and Wa lker Commodity Brokers. "It normally fetches top market prices." Mr Perera said that cardamom from the Indian clone has an annual yield of 2,000 kg a hectare, compared with a mere annual average of 260 to 400 kg a hectare for Sri Lankan varieties
