INDIA'S spices exports were 4% up in volume this July at 40,625 tonnes from 38,975 tonnes in July 2008 and 4% lower in value at Rs4.6bn ($93.7m) against Rs4.8bn in the same month a year ago, but overall sales for the season are still lagging behind those of a year ago. Shipments of chillies, small cardamoms, turmeric, nutmeg and mace and garlic, were all higher this July.
However, this was not enough to make up for the shortfalls seen in recent months and the cumulative export total for the April to July 2009 period is 164,215 tonnes, 14% down from 189,870 tonnes over the same four months of 2008.
