INDIAN cardamom production has been projected to rise by between 15% and 20% in the current fiscal year and may breach the 12,000tonne mark. According to latest estimates from the country's Spices Board, production in 2005/06 will total about 11,000 tonnes up from 9,000 to 9,500 tonnes in 2004/05. However, local sources said that this figure could rise if cardamom regions receive favourable levels of rainfall in the coming months. Local traders have said that they also expect cardamom prices to fall this year in response to an increase in production, as well as the availability of illegal cardamom imports from Guatemala.
